Heat death of the universe

The hypothetical final state in which entropy reaches its maximum and no usable energy gradients remain.

Definition

The heat death of the universe is the conjectured end state implied by extrapolating the second law to the cosmos as a whole. If the entropy of the universe always increases, it must eventually approach a maximum: a state of uniform temperature with no gradients to drive heat flow, no free energy to extract as work, and so no possibility of any process — including life.

The idea does not require the universe to run out of energy; energy is conserved. It requires the energy to become uniformly distributed and thermodynamically unavailable. Work can only be extracted from differences — in temperature, pressure, or concentration — and at maximum entropy all such differences have been erased.

Modern cosmology complicates the nineteenth-century picture with gravity, cosmic expansion, and dark energy, which change how entropy and equilibrium behave on the largest scales, but the heat death remains the canonical thermodynamic vision of the far future.

History

Clausius spelled out the heat death in 1865 in the same lecture that named entropy; the bleak prospect was debated by Helmholtz, Kelvin, and Boltzmann, and remains a touchstone in discussions of the arrow of time and the fate of the universe.
