Ludwig Boltzmann
Austrian physicist who tied entropy to molecular probability and founded statistical mechanics.
Biography
Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann was born in Vienna in 1844 and held a series of professorships across the Austro-Hungarian and German worlds — Graz, Vienna, Munich, Leipzig — moving restlessly throughout his life. He was a brilliant lecturer and a passionate defender of the atomic theory of matter at a time when many leading scientists doubted that atoms were real.
Boltzmann's central achievement was to give entropy a microscopic meaning. Where Clausius had defined entropy through heat and temperature, Boltzmann showed that it counts the number of microscopic arrangements — microstates — consistent with a system's macroscopic state. The more ways a state can be realised, the higher its entropy, and the overwhelming statistical tendency toward more probable states is the second law.
This insight is captured in the formula S = k log W, relating entropy S to the number of microstates W through Boltzmann's constant k. The equation is carved on his tombstone in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof. Boltzmann suffered from bouts of severe depression, worsened by fierce scientific opposition to his atomistic views from figures such as Mach and Ostwald. He took his own life in 1906 while on holiday at Duino, near Trieste — only a few years before experiments on Brownian motion settled the reality of atoms decisively in his favour.
