Harry Nyquist

Bell Labs theorist who derived thermal noise from thermodynamics and laid foundations for control theory and sampling.

Biography

Harry Nyquist was born in Nilsby, Sweden, in 1889 and emigrated to the United States in 1907. He earned his PhD in physics from Yale in 1917 and spent his career at AT&T and Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he became one of the most influential engineers and theorists of the twentieth century.

In 1928 Nyquist explained his colleague Johnson's noise measurements from first principles, deriving the formula V² = 4k_BTRΔf by a thermodynamic argument that made no reference to the microscopic behaviour of electrons. The derivation was an early and elegant instance of what would later be recognised as the fluctuation–dissipation theorem, connecting a resistor's noise to its dissipative resistance.

The same year, in 'Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory', Nyquist established results on the maximum signalling rate of a channel that became foundational for the sampling theorem later completed by Shannon. His 1932 work on feedback amplifiers produced the Nyquist stability criterion, a cornerstone of control theory.

Nyquist's name is attached to ideas across communications, control and statistical physics — a rare breadth. He retired from Bell Labs in 1954 and died in 1976.
